Massage for Inflammation

Inflammation is a natural process in the body. It is the body’s response to a traumatic event, for example an infection or an injured joint. It is part of the healing process. When there is an injury the body sends substances to protect and cushion the injured parts; we call this edema.* When there is an infection or irritant, the body reacts in a similar way to ight the problem and protect against future assaults. Sometimes the body overreacts and inflammation becomes self-perpetuating or the body becomes confused and reacts to healthy tissues. Reasons for inflammation:

  • Injury or infection
  • Stress
  • Insufficient or poor quality sleep
  • Autoimmune disorders
  • Gluten or other food allergies
  • Unhealthy lifestyle

And many others…. Why should you be concerned about inflammation? Because it can negatively impact your life in many ways. Here are some examples of diseases linked to chronic inflammation:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Asthma
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Atherosclerosis (plaque in arteries).
  • Hay fever and sinusitis
  • Peptic ulcer
  • Tuberculosis

And many others… As you might have guessed, massage is extremely effective in relieving inflammation and edema where they have become chronic and hinder the healing process. I also recommend that you seek out other possible solutions along with massage therapy like: meditation, ice, omega-3 oils, curcumin and possibly acupuncture. You can always call me for a free consultation to see if massage might get you out of that self-perpetuating inflammatory loop. *Injury is just one manifestation of edema; there are many, many other causes.
